Elegant bentwood stool from the Art Nouveau period by the traditional company J.&J. Kohn, Austria - Hungary.
This stool exudes the charm of a bygone era and, with its solid handcraft, embodies the type of high-quality, long-lasting piece of furniture. The stool has been lovingly restored.
The stool is made of bent beech wood and has a bentwood ring underneath the seat for stability. This construction principle was developed by Michael Thonet and used in many of his chairs and stools. The seat is made of slightly inward-curved plywood - it was missing and I replaced it. The seat frame has a slight profile that suggests that the stool probably dates back to the 19th century. The surfaces of the stool are stained to rosewood and coated with shellac. Signs of wear on the surfaces have been left - see detailed photos. The stool contains the Kohn milling disc in the seat frame, but the company name can only be guessed at: the lettering read J.&J. Kohn.
The stool is in good, restored overall condition: all screws are tight and the surfaces have been painted with shellac. A beautiful collector's item and design classic.
